ED CLARKE

Sound designer and composer

Ed got his first theatre gig – working follow-spots in the West End – whilst still a student. He worked as Head of Sound at Theatre Royal Stratford East and at Lyric Theatre Hammersmith, before leaving theatre to work in live music, including touring with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Talvin Singh, Evelyn Glennie, Blue Man Group and Van der Graaf Generator, and working many festivals including David Bowie’s Meltdown in 2002.

He continues to design high-profile shows such as Frankenstein (National Theatre 2012), Backbeat (West End 2013) and Showboat (new London Theatre 2016), as well as more idiosyncratic and experimental shows such as Beauty and the Beast for Improbable / 1ofUs which toured the UK, has played Australia and the USA and Little Bulb Theatre’s Orpheus which has toured internationally.

He was nominated for an Olivier award in 2012.

He is still slightly surprised that this accidental career has taken him around the world and enabled him to work with a few of his childhood heroes.

Middle Child’s ethos combining the excitement of gigs with the involvement of theatrical story-telling is right up his street, and being an associate artist of the company is an honour.
