Middle Child Book Club

Through our Theatre Library we often hear people say they want to read more plays but don’t know where to start. Well, fear not, the Middle Child Book Club is here for all of your play-reading needs.

It’s a simple three-step programme:

1) Each month we’ll suggest a brilliant play to read

2) You borrow said brilliant play from our library, returning it in good time for others to read it too

3) You come along to the Book Club over a Friday lunchtime and say whatever you’d like about the play, remembering there are no wrong answers and that it’s not a test! Easy, right?

We started in August 2023 with Happy Meal by Tabby Lamb, followed by The Darkest Part of the Night by Zodwa Nyoni in September, Our Generation by Alecky Blythe in October and Red Pitch by Tyrell Williams in November.

Violence and Son

Violence and Son by Gary Owen

Friday 1 March, 10-11.30am

Liam’s 17 years old, loves Doctor Who and has lost his mum.

He’s had to leave his home and move to Wales, to the Valleys, to the middle of nowhere, to live with a dad he doesn’t know…whose nickname isn’t Violence for nothing.

Gary Owen’s intimate new play is about what parents pass on and trying to do the right thing and is one of the inspirations for Maureen Lennon’s new play, Baby, He Loves You, which we will be producing in April 2024.

Content warnings: Strong language, misogyny, emotional abuse and sexual assault

Copies of Violence and Son are available to borrow from our Theatre Library in High Street, Hull. Please also RSVP using our online form, so we know to expect you on the day.
