Write your first play with our Writers’ Group, led by Tom Wells

Lick that dried-up biro and cast away any doubts about your writing ability – our introduction to playwriting group is back this autumn and you need to apply.

The Middle Child Writers’ Group, led by the wonderful Tom Wells, is open to novice writers in Hull of all ages and no experience.

And it’s completely free.

All you need is a few good stories to tell – funny stories, sad stories, tough stories, tender stories – stories we’re eager to see on Hull stages.

Over five weeks Tom, whose work has been staged in theatres across the country, will take you through finding your voice, creating characters, structuring plot, crafting worlds and writing zippy dialogue.

You’ll then be sent away to write your first play – whatever that looks like to you – with feedback from Tom and the chance to make some changes, before professional actors bring them to life for the first time in a private sharing.

The Writers’ Group, now in its fourth year, launched to help budding writers in the city learn the skills they need to pen their first draft without having to leave Hull for expensive courses and retreats elsewhere.

Each year includes no more than a dozen writers, making for an intimate and supportive group, some of whom have since gone on to explore careers in theatre and performance.

Workshops will start on Wednesday 14 September at our Theatre Library on High Street, from 6-8pm.

Applications are now open – see our Writers’ Group page for more detail on workshop dates and how to apply before the Monday 15 August deadline.
