“We have grown up in towns where the people around us don’t go to the theatre because they think it’s dull. We want to change that. Middle Child has developed a voice that has become synonymous with a new form of theatre. We have been called ‘loud’ and ‘crude’ and we repeatedly experiment with form and have blurred the line between gig and play.
We want to push ourselves further. We want to make theatre that will excite audiences, that will be a real remedy to the elitist nature of so much of the theatre we experience. We will strive to tell the stories that are being neglected and tell them in new and innovative ways. We will find new ways to excite new audiences, whether that be through use of music or venue or visual arts, if it means looking at show times, or length, or prices, we will break down the barriers that prevent people enjoying theatre.
We make our work in, the 2017 UK City of Culture, Hull. It has been our home for the last decade and it has had a massive influence on the kind of work we make. It is a city with a thriving music scene, top class sports teams and a reputation for being a great place to go for a good night out. We will do everything we can to make the theatre scene feel just as vibrant.
We are determined to make theatre truly unmissable.”
